Episode 15 - Madi Bugg

It’s always weird coming back to a place where you used to live. I played in Mulhouse 2 seasons and have soooooo many memories here. Memories with teammates, with family that came to visit, on court moments. Coffee in the centre, day trips to Basel, Octoberfest across the border in Germany. All of the feels and more.

So I was a bit emotional being here, but in a good way. And hearing how good Madi feels here on this team, with these people, in these streets and gyms that are so familiar to me was such a good feeling.

Mulhouse is well known in France for its high level of play, great facilities, top notch car sponsor Honda, comfortable apartments, and all around taking good care of their players. Which was confirmed when Madi told me how well the club handled the covid situation that ended the season early in March 2020, and that all the players got their full salary. Which wasn’t mandated by the government, and certainly wasn’t the case in all of France, definitely not all of Europe.

Madi was so sweet to prepare me some pumpkin ravioli for lunch, and we chatted about our potential lives after volleyball. Her apartment is so cozy and welcoming, we could have hung out for hours if I hadn’t remembered I was actually there to do a ‘job’. It’s great to get to know someone so honest and open, as well as passionate about our sport.

To give you an idea of how sweet and non-narcissistic Madi is, I couldn’t find a single selfie on her instagram to use as a thumbnail image. Just sayin.

K bye.
